Born in Washington, at North Carolina.
Post secondary education: Agricultural and Technical State University Greensberg, North Carolina. BS degree with a major in biological science and a minor in chemistry. Military service: three years of service in WWII to infantry, including 18 months of Combat in the Pacific. Work career: 20 years with the U.S. Postal Service, including 5 as Postal Service Information Representative, and 10 as Station Superintendent (Powderhorn and Diamond Lake stations in Minneapolis) Established and own for 10 years a small business: C and L Landscaped and Gardens Center, a firm specializing primary in commercial and industrial landscape construction and maintenance. Community involvement: 40 plus years of active participation and leadership in the the local, state, and National NAACP, including 8 years as president of the Minneapolis branch, during which time several major lawsuits were initiated two of which are still in the process of attempting to be implemented: desegregation of the Minneapolis school system and the Hollman Decree on the near North side of Minneapolis. Organized and chaired the Minnesota contingent of the 1963 march on Washington in which Martin Luther King gave his now famous "I Have A Dream" speech. Was a charter board member of the Minneapolis civil-rights commission Has served on a plethora of human rights and community non-profit boards. Political Involvement: Years of activity with Democratic politics. 5 times elected to State Executive Committee; 4 times elected delgate to National Democratic Convention; twice elected as President Elector to cast one of the states' 10 electoral votes for President of the United states. Awards: 1991 Richfield Citizen of the year; 1992 Human Rights Award, Minneapolis League of Human Rights Commission; Omega Psi Phi Citizen of the Year award, Hennepin County Citizen of the Year, 1992 Minneapolis Human Rights Commission' MLK Human Rights Award; Hubert Humphrey Award by the State Democratic Party. 1993 State of Minnesota Citizen of the Year, honored at the State Fair. Minneapolis Urban League Outstanding Civic and Service award. 2002 The Board of Regents at University of Minnesota awarded Matt with a honorary Doctorate of Law Degree for a long time community service. |
