Portrait by Del Bey
Coaching athletics, civil and human rights, housing, banking, author-Overcoming: an autobiography published 2002. What do you think of the Civil Rights Movement today? "Well, I think it´s still in existence. I think it´s more powerful than we think it is. I think because of the technical understanding and the promotional ways of the news media we know how to get across to a large number of people without being beaten, or having hoses put on you, or dogs after you. We´re past that. We are now using intelligence that we have picked up through the areas of learning institutions with people who can teach us and guide us. Weªre becoming more sophisticated with it and we don´t have to allow people to put their lives on the line to get things done. There will always be a need. There will always be people that will disagree. There will always be people that will hate, distrust, and humiliate people of color." |
