Dawn Renee Jones

Dawn Renee Jones came of age as a writer and performance artists under the
tutelage of some of Chicago's most innovative and accomplished Black artists.
She studied acting with Katherine Slade, dance with Jewell Mc Laurin,
and writing at the OBAC Writer's Workshop with encouragement
from Don L. Lee (Haki Matabuti) and Carolyn Rogers.

Between 1967 and 1973 she performed with the Darlene Blackburn Dance Company
and was a frequent collaborator with members of the seminal creative music collective
the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM).
The Chicago Black Arts scene of that period was a close knit
and vibrant community where she learned much from the composer/educator
Phil Cohran and members of AfroCobra, a visual arts collective.
Dawn is currently the artistic director of Alchemy Theater in Minneapolis.
